The mission of ICNF - Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, is to propose, monitor and ensure the implementation of nature and forest conservation policies, aiming at conservation, sustainable use, appreciation, enjoyment and public recognition of the natural heritage. Nature Tourism Enterprises are considered to be establishments intended to provide accommodation services to tourists in Classified Areas and/or in the area covered by the Natural.PT brand.

This recognition is based on the implementation and adherence to a set of requirements and criteria of good environmental practices and on participation in at least one nature and biodiversity conservation project.

The following types can be recognized as Nature Tourism Enterprises:
* Hotel establishments;
* Tourist villages;
* Tourist apartments;
* Tourist complexes (resorts);
* Housing tourism developments;
* Rural tourism ventures;
* Camping and caravan parks.
